70 Chic Coi Leray Braids to Rock Your Mane in 2024

What Are Coi Leray Braids?

Coi Leray braids involves jumbo knotless braids with curly ends, which are achieved by braiding hair in large sections.

This protective hairstyle got its moniker because Coi Leray popularized it by performing in this hairstyle.

Coi Leray is an up-and-coming American rapper and singer whose debut album ‘Trendsetter’ included guest appearances from Nicki Minaj, Yung Bleu, Fivio Foreign, and Lil Durk.

Why are Coi Leray Braids Worth it?

Let’s break down why Coi Leray braids became an instant hit amongst people recently.

Low Maintenance

Coi Leray braids require minimal maintenance once installed. Not only is the installation process of this protective hairstyle quick but it is the perfect hairstyle for anybody who is always on the go and doesn’t have hours to spend every day on hair care.

If you struggle with excessive hair sebum production or take part in sports, then this is a great hairstyle because you can easily clean your scalp and braids with shampoo.

Fashionable, Customizable, and Versatile

Coi Leray braids are incredibly fashionable right now due to the growing popularity of rapper Coi Leray. This protective hairstyle can be styled in a number of different ways to fit the occasion. You can also easily add your own personal touch to this hairstyle and customize it so it fits your personality.

Quick Installation

It is really easy to install Coi Leray braids. It took me two hours to install this style on my friend.

How Long Should Coi Leray Braids Last?

This trendy hairstyle typically lasts between 4 to 6 weeks. This hairstyle tends to last a little shorter than other protective hairstyles and braids because the hair at the end of the braids is prone to tangling and the braids tend to frizz. Yet even though this hairstyle doesn’t last for a long time, it doesn’t cause a lot of damage to your natural hair, promotes hair growth, is easy to maintain, and can be installed relatively quickly.

How Long Does It Take To Install Coi Leray Braids?

The installation process of Coi Leray hair depends on how well-prepared you are. If your hair is washed and prepped for styling, then the styling process should last roughly 2 hours.

When I installed this hairstyle on a friend, the only time-consuming part was carefully sectioning the hair. Braiding the hair was a piece of cake.

Professional installation of Coi Leray braids is not as expensive as other protective hairstyles. It will cost you between $150 to $250 depending on where you live and the hair extensions you use.

What Type of Braiding Hair Do You Use For Coi Leray Braids?

In my experience, Coi Leray braids don’t need a specific type of braiding hair. You can use synthetic or natural hair extensions as long as they are pre-stretched for installation.

Can I Do Coi Leray Braids on Natural Hair?

Yes, you can easily achieve Coi Leray braids on your natural hair, if you have thick hair. My only advice is to skip dipping your hair into boiling water to curl your hair. Instead, apply a thick layer of curling cream on slightly damp hair and firmly roll the ends with a perm roller.

Set a hair dryer on its highest setting and move it around your ends. Leave the perm rollers on the ends of your hair for a few hours before removing the perm rollers and apply a layer of lock-in cream or oil.

Can I Do Coi Leray Braids Myself?

While I have never installed this hairstyle on myself before, I have installed it on a friend and the installation process was relatively easy and quick. However, installing a hairstyle without a second pair of hands has its own struggles because you cannot see the back and sides of hair easily. Plus, braiding can be painful on your arms and shoulders.

If you want to save money and want to achieve this look yourself, then I highly recommend blow-drying your hair with a brush beforehand. Use hair gel to define the edges and sections of your hair while parting the hair. Also, breaks whenever required to avoid getting flustered and irritated. Follow the installation tips listed in the following section to achieve this hairstyle.

How To Install Coi Leray Braids?

To install Coi Leray braids you require pre or unstretched synthetic or human braiding hair, along with hair mousse, black elastic bands, rat tail comb, a perm rod, hot water, edge control, and hair taming gel. After you have shampooed and conditioned your hair, let your hair completely dry before braiding the hair. Now, your hair is ready to be braided.

After applying moisturizer or a leave-in conditioner to your hair, divide your hair into sections, depending on how many braids you want to achieve. Usually, Coi Leray has a few chunky braids but if that is too heavy for your scalp, then you can part them into smaller sections.

Use the metal end of the rat comb to define the square shape of each section before applying gel to each section to tame the hair at the roots. Using gel is great because it defines each section and reduces the risk of hair from different sections mixing. Now, start braiding your hair and gradually add hair extensions in accordance with your preferred braid length and width.

During this step, you can also accessorize your hair with colorful chords, beads, and highlighted hair extensions. After you have braided to your preferred length, secure the braids with a rubber band, leaving at least 6 to 7 inches of unbraided hair (extensions). Repeat the process in other sections. Once you have successfully braided your entire head, now it is time to curl your ends.

One by one, dip the unbraided hair in hot water. Pat the hair dry and roll it in a curler or perm rod. Secure with bobby pins and leave it on for a few hours. Carefully remove the curlers from each braid after a few hours. To seal the hair and set the style, apply a generous layer of mouse to each braid. Make sure to lather each braid and hair strand with the mouse.

How To Maintain Coi Leray Braids?

To maintain Coi Leray Braids, follow these steps-

Clean Your Scalp Regularly

One of the great benefits of this protective hairstyle is that you can wash your scalp as if you didn’t have any braids installed. However, if you are worried about your hair frizzing and don’t want to risk washing your hair, then remove build-up with a cotton ball and astringent, apple cider vinegar, or dry shampoo.

Regularly Apply Mousse

Since frizz is inevitable, apply a mouse to your braids whenever you notice flyaways. Also, you can control new growth at the root by applying edge control.

Detangle Your Curly Ends

Detangle your curly ends with a brush. If your curls are unravelling then retain their shape by wearing flexi rods overnight. You can also use a curling rod to curl the ends if wearing flexi rods hurts your neck.

Wear a Satin or Silk Bonnet While Sleeping

Before going to sleep wrap your hair in a silk or satin bonnet. Apply a leave-in conditioner or moisturizer to tame the flyaways.
